Sharpening Your Tools: Whole-Brain Songwriting ~ with Jud Caswell

A wise person once said, “A man who works with his hands is a laborer. A man who works with his hands and his head is a craftsman. A man who works with his hands, his head, and his heart is an artist.” As artists, we all know the
importance of having our heart in our work — it’s the muse that inspires us, that makes us feel — it’s the wind in our sails that carries us forward. Often as not, our heads get in the way of this: we have overactive critics who serve only to stifle our momentum. But art without critical attention is a sailboat without a rudder or keel — you can only run with the wind, and are quick to capsize. In this course we’ll work to find a productive role for our “head” in our creativity. In this course you will:
– Learn basic music theory, demystifying keys, scales, and chord numbering systems, working toward charting your songs
– Explore the basic song structures and see how the masters make compelling music by balancing repetition and novelty in form
– Learn to use alternate tunings and short capos to find new sounds on your guitar
